Surfing at Hermosa

Surfing at Playa Hermosa

With hundreds of miles of uncrowded surf and varied coastline it's no secret that Costa Rica is the surf destination of Central America. HSV Surf Camp is centrally located on the sand in the Central Pacific region at the most active and consistent wave in Costa Rica. Our 2 bedroom private bungalows are literally steps away from the famous Almendro Tree at Playa Hermosa, offering miles of empty beach break peaks to choose from in either direction. While most days right out front are for the intermediate to experienced surfer, the inside section closer to shore will be less challenging for beginners. Other breaks within 5 minutes drive can safely accommodate the less experienced surfer too. With the help of one of our surf guides and a little local knowledge we can get you at the comfort level you desire. For those looking to be more adventurous, many other world-class tropical breaks are within a 30 minute drive or boat ride. Whether you are looking for a barreling reef, juicy beach break peaks, or long, mushy point break waves, we can get you there. We have all the knowledge of where to go and when, what spot works on what direction swell and which tide is best for each location.

Surfline.com did a feature on Playa Hermosa, which can be seen by clicking on this link.

Board Rentals are Available at HSV Surf Camp. Whether you are a shortboarder or longboarder, and regardless of your skill level our staff will put you in the type of surf you want. If you are unable to bring your own boards or unwilling to pay the “ransom” demanded of the airlines these days, we have a variety of boards to choose from—from 5’10” super wide epoxy retro fish twin-fins, to many high performance shortboards between 6’1” and 6”9”. We even have several 9’6” longboards and soft-top longboards which are much more “forgiving” to those who are just learning to surf.

Daily Surf Charters

Surf Boat Charters are available for those hard to reach spots when the waves are firing. From unknown reefs to named breaks, we can get to spots that require a boat every day of the week. Cold drinks, beer and snacks are provided on each half-day charter. We can even arrange a photographer to sit in the channel and take snapshots of you carving up waves if you like. Nothing better than documenting the time of your life!

Pavones is great for intermediate to experienced surfers. It can hold a very big swell and offer some of the longest rides on the planet. It’s a left point break that has several takeoff spots. It has some sections that barrel but for the most part it is a rippable shoulder that keeps going and going.
